Five fire departments are battling a fire that's burning a number of potato warehouses in northeastern North Dakota.

Walsh County Sheriff Ron Jurgens says strong winds are hampering firefighters' efforts Friday morning at the complex in Edinburg.

The structures are owned by J.G. Hall and Sons, one of the largest potato producers in the Red River Valley and a major employer in the Edinburg area.

Jurgens says it's hard to determine the number of warehouses involved because of all the smoke, but he says several have been destroyed.

Crews are working to protect large propane and fuel tanks in the area.

A call about the fire came in shortly after 4 a.m.
