Body of missing camper found

SISKIYOU COUNTY, Calif. — On Monday, May 13, 2019, at about 11:50 a.m., Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) deputies responded to the Twin Arrows Campground in response to a missing person’s report. The reporting party advised deputies her boyfriend had been missing since the previous evening when he wandered away from their campsite. The missing party was allegedly consuming alcoholic beverages and marijuana during the day, prior to his disappearance that night. The missing man was reportedly last seen near the South Fork of the Sacramento River, not far from the campground. Twin Arrows Campground is located south of Siskiyou Lake in a rural area of Siskiyou County, several miles southwest of Mount Shasta City. The area is primarily United States Forest Service (USFS) land.

The reporting party was told by other campers in the area her boyfriend was last seen near the river’s bank and she was concerned because he was a non-swimmer. SCSO’s Search and Rescue (SAR) team coordinator was notified and a request was made for a California Highway Patrol (CHP) helicopter (H-14) to respond to search the area by air in an attempt to locate the missing man. CHP’s H-14 crew arrived on-scene and conducted an aerial search of the river area. At about 3:04 p.m., the helicopter crew spotted what appeared to be a body wedged in some rocks in the middle of the river, about one-quarter mile north and down-stream from the campground.

The SCSO Dive Team responded to the recovery site and retrieved the body from the river. The body was located about 30 feet from the nearest shore. The body was identified as the missing man, Mr. Jeremy Wayne Price, 31, most recently from Asheville, North Carolina. His next-of-kin was notified. An autopsy will be conducted within the next few days to help investigators affirm the cause and manner of death in the case.

According to Sheriff Jon Lopey, “On behalf of the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, I would like to offer our thoughts and prayers to the decedent, his family, and friends in the aftermath of his death. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the CHP’s H-14 helicopter crew, SCSO deputies, SCSO Dive team members, and SCSO’s SAR Coordinator for their role in finding and recovering Mr. Price’s remains. This case is still under investigation and anyone with information about this case is urged to contact SCSO’s 24-hour Dispatch Center at (530) 841-2900.”
