A Surprise Hit

While the box office is usually dominated by superhero movies, sequels, and remakes, it is especially nice to see an original, adult idea make it big. One of 2019's best surprise hits was Knives Out, a whodunnit murder mystery with a modern twist. Not only did Chris Evans' fisherman's sweater from the film become the winter look that everyone was obsessed with, but Knives Out was a hit with critics and audiences alike.

Add on top of that a $279 million worldwide box office, and of course people are talking sequel.

Will It Get A Sequel?

Now, a sequel focusing on a different case solved by Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc would be a pretty brilliant idea. He may be done with the despicable Thrombey family, but surely the gentleman sleuth has more mysteries to solve.

Director and writer Rian Johnson was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and he has "a few ideas he's kicking around," but he doesn't want to rush forward with a sub-par idea.

"There’s a lot that has to happen: First and foremost, I have to write a script that’s worth a damn, so we’ll see. I don’t want to jump the gun, but it’s something I would love to do. First of all, because I had so much fun working with Daniel, and second, just because of the idea of doing the same thing that Agatha Christie did with Poirot and Miss Marple — just doing a whole different deal with Benoit Blanc as the detective. The possibilities of that seem endless in a way that’s really exciting."

Daniel Craig Is All In

Should Johnson come up with the proper follow up case for Benoit Blanc, Daniel Craig is all in. He enthusiastically told Entertainment Weekly that he would love to return to the Southern fried character and work with Johnson again.

"Sure, I’d be over the moon. I mean, I’d do anything for Rian. If he writes something, I’ll do it. Of course I will. Why wouldn’t I? I had a ton of fun doing it. You aim for that every time, you aim for that to work out. It rarely, rarely does, but it did on that movie and how nice is that?"

Johnson Has Ideas

Johnson joked around on Twitter when a fan tweeted that "Each sequel to Knives Out should have Daniel Craig doing a totally different accent, which is never explained," to which Johnson replied "Ok I'm going to be very honest right now - I've had that thought."

Entertainment Weekly also asked the most important question: would more incredible sweaters be involved in a Knives Out sequel?

"I don’t know! I think maybe the answer is to go someplace warm. We’ll see. I don’t think we can top Chris Evans in the cable-knit. You don’t try and top that."
