Mitt Romney's English Mormon roots

The Republican candidate for the US presidency, Mitt Romney, has English roots.

His great-great grandparents, Miles Romney and Elizabeth Gaskell, came from the north of England, and were among the first-ever British converts to Mormonism. They were baptised in the River Ribble in Preston in 1837, and emigrated to the US in 1841.

Originally from Dalton-in-Furness, they were living in Penwortham, just outside Preston, when they converted to the faith. Here is a tour of some of the key spots associated with their life in England and their conversion.
