Obituary: Charles Gamer, 91, Of Windsor

WINDSOR, CT - Charles Ludwig Gamer, 91, of Windsor, passed away on January 5th, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Newport, RI on July 23rd, 1927.

After attending Rogers High School in Newport, Charlie, aka as “Carl”, enlisted in the U.S Merchant Marines in November 1943 where he proudly supplied the U.S. Navy 3rd Fleet in WWII. Upon returning from the war, he worked as a driver while operating an ice plant. Subsequently, he moved to New Orleans where he opened his own bar at 18. Next, Charlie moved to Milwaukee and worked at Briggs & Stratton, and then moved to Hartford to work as a supervisor at Veeder Root. After leaving Veeder Root, he began working at HELCO at the South Meadow Station.

He became the building supervisor at Northeast Utilities leading to maintenance manager’s position overseeing all the buildings in CT and Western MA retiring after 31 years. Other interests that brought him joy included being on the Public Building Commission in Windsor, founding the Civil Defense Scuba Squad Recovery Team, watching the Red Sox and UCONN Women’s Basketball team with his wife, having cocktails by his pool surrounded by his fantastic neighbors and friends as well as beating Gary in cribbage. He also cherished the 35 winters he spent in Luquillo, PR with the love of his life and abundant friends.

Charlie, above all, was a wonderful husband and father, completely devoted to his family and friends. He is the loving husband of the late Ellen B. Gamer, and is survived by his three children; David C. Gamer and his wife, Roberta of Glen Ellyn, IL, Karen E. Worley and her husband Jeff of Canton, CT, and Thomas A. Gamer and his wife Laura of Chelmsford, MA. He is also survived by his four grandchildren who he was deeply proud of and loved dearly; Sam Worley, Ben Worley, Jackson Gamer and Ryan Gamer.

His family will receive friends Sunday, January 13, 2019 from 1-2 pm prior to a Funeral Service at 2 pm in the Chapel of the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Avenue, Windsor. Burial will follow in Windsor Veterans Memorial Cemetery with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Charlies name to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
