Sheldon School’s sixth form maths teams proved they know their numbers when they won the regional final of the UK Senior Team Mathematics Challenge.

The team – Jack Ryan, Joel Edgecumbe, Matthew Almond and Jake Chivers – beat 19 teams of the best maths students from local schools and colleges in the regional final, at Hardenhuish School, in Chippenham.

The event contained a series of demanding mathematical challenges and lasted for over three hours. The challenge consisted of three rounds of group problem solving, a team cross number puzzle and a mathematical relay race.

The competition is organised by the Further Mathematics Support Programme and the UK Mathematics Trust, and is sponsored by Rolls Royce.

Michael Seeley, assistant headteacher at Sheldon School, said: “Sheldon’s sixth form team did incredibly well to beat opposition from all over the south west and now have the chance to pit themselves against the best teams in the country at the national finals in London, on February 5.”
