Medical professionals from Madison Wisconsin's VA hospital take questions from Rockford-area veterans over the nation's new mission act.

“It's not just 'oh your home from the military jump back into your old life. You have to learn how to jump back into your own skin," said Marine Corps Veteran, Karen Oertal.

Oertel spent years suffering from ankle pain until she learned about the resources available through the Department of Veterans Affairs.

"I got some shots in my ankle and it's not perfect obviously but it's 100% better than it was," Oertal said.

Oertel also used her benefits to fight through mental health problems.

" I'm not too shy to say the mental health facilities or aspects of the VA are a lifesaver," Oertal said.

On Tuesday she learned about something called the MISSION Act from employees who work at

William S. Middletown Veterans Memorial Hospital in Madison.

"So the MISSION Act is an act that went into effect on June 6th that expanded eligibility for community care and also added an urgent care benefit," said Abe Rabinowitz, William S. Middletown Veterans Memorial Hospital.

This acts provides funding for seven new clinics within the Greater Rockford area giving veterans a lot more access to medical help.

"That's a nice option to have because there are some things you go an hour and a half back in fourth and it makes for a very long day," Oertal said.

"As we evolve and add more providers to that urgent care network we hope that there will be expanded access for that care," Rabinowitz said.
