Japan offers air defense radar to the Philippines — Lorenzana

MANILA, Philippines — Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana on Thursday confirmed reports that Japan is selling its air defense radar technology to the Philippines.

“Yes, they are offering to us their latest radars. It is one of the platforms being evaluated by the Philippine Air Force,” he told reporters.

Japanese news agency Asia Nikkei reported over the weekend that Japan is selling its Mitsubishi Electric FPS-3 air defense radar system. If it would push through, it would be the first time that Japan will export defense equipment after five decades since the ban was lifted in 2014.

The Philippines will reportedly decide by early next year.

Lorenzana said this platform will monitor aircraft and sea craft traversing, entering or leaving the Philippine territory. /kga
