A Rocky Comfort man has been charged in federal court with threatening to assault an FBI agent.

Richard W. Toler, 47, of Rocky Comfort, was charged in a criminal complaint made public after his arrest and appearance in federal court on Wednesday. Toler remains in federal custody.

Federal authorities say Toler threatened to assault an FBI agent on several occasions with the intent to intimidate and retaliate.

According to an affidavit, Toler left more than 30 voicemail messages for the agent. In many of the voicemails, Toler yelled, cursed and accused the agent of ignoring his duties. Toler also made threats about the agent's family.

In one voice mail Toler allegedly said, “I think you should look at your kids … I think you should give them a … hug … in case this is the last Christmas you get to spend with them.”

The investigation into Toler's alleged threats began in the Chicago offices of the FBI, after Toler repeatedly threatened a woman with whom Toler has a son, and a manager at a Whole Foods store where she worked.
