SUPERSTARS Runrig are playing a benefit gig in Greenock Town Hall.

Scotland's top Celtic rock band has teamed up with Provost Ciano Rebecchi and charity Glasgow The Caring City to play to a 1,000 crowd on 9 December.

Their benefit gig will raise money for the hundreds of thousands of people left devastated by the South Asian earthquake and other disasters around the world this year.

Provost Rebecchi said: `It has been under wraps for a long time but finally we can announce it.

`It is a way of saying thank you to the people of Inverclyde for all the money raised during the tsunami appeal.` It is expected there will be a scramble to grab the £20 tickets when they go on sale this Friday.

All money raised will go towards Glasgow The Caring City charity's international relief fund which this week is appealing for cash donations for the south Asian earthquake.

Fire chief Dave Adam, in charge of operations in Renfewshire and Inverclyde, sits on Glasgow The Caring City's board of directors.

He said: `It is great for Greenock that Runrig are coming here.` To donate to the earthquake survivors phone the Glasgow The Caring City's helpline on 0800 612 6612.

The charity is also seeking volunteers to help run a Glasgow call centre that was set up on Monday as a direct result of the weekend's disaster.

Tickets for the Runrig gig are expected to be on sale at local outlets with confirmation to follow.
