Have Mercy on Me . . . And on the Whole World

Have Mercy on Me . . . And on the Whole World June 3, 2018

On May 25, 2018, I asked every teacher in our school to begin their classes with a prayer for Ireland. I teach in a Catholic school – where every class begins with prayer. Therefore, it was not an unusual request. However, the plea for Ireland was due to the elections that were being held on that fateful day.

Choose Life

Throughout the day, I couldn’t help but think of Moses’ words to the Israelites as he approached his own death: “I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life, then, that you and your descendants may live . . .” (Deuteronomy 30:19).

Tragically, Ireland chose death.

And, as inconceivable as it may seem, this victory for death was met with cheers and celebration.

The Power of Prayer

Within the Catholic tradition is a beautiful prayer called The Divine Mercy Chaplet. It is a meaningful recitation that reminds us of God’s limitless mercy. Oh, how our world must rely upon this mercy – even more so now. I reflect upon this prayer as I consider the implications of the vote in Ireland – and the incalculable tragedy our own nation has endured because of abortion.

For the babies who will be brutally murdered within their mother’s womb I pray:

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

For the women who are pressured and coerced into killing their unborn child (for the convenience of another), I pray:

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

For the men who desperately want the child in the womb to live, but whose voices are ignored, I pray:

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

For all of the women who have had an abortion and suffer regret, pain, depression – and yet, whose anguish is silenced by the powerful, multi-million-dollar abortion industry, I pray:

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

For those who are and who will be sexually trafficked and abused I pray:

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

For children who are denied siblings I pray:

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

For grandparents who are denied grandchildren, I pray:

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

For couples who wait to adopt, and whose hope is now dwindling I pray:

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

For all people who are tricked into thinking that butchering a child in the womb is in some way empowering women – while others take advantage of these women sexually, emotionally, professionally, and financially, I pray:

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

For our world, a world that is losing the gift of life – the relationships these children would have brought, the inventions and discoveries, the creativity, the joy, the goodness, the light, and the beauty to a world that is becoming increasingly dark and ugly, I pray:

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Have mercy on us and on the whole World!

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Have mercy on us and on the whole World!

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Have mercy on us and on the whole World!

Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion — inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.

Jesus, I trust in You!

Jesus, I trust in You!

Jesus, I trust in You!
