Learn to make a sugar skull at a workshop Friday sponsored by Flagstaff Nuestras RaÃces. The workshop will be held from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church & Cultural Center, 224 S. Kendrick St. The cost is $10 for a completed sugar skull and decorating supplies.
Learn the secrets of turning water and sugar into skulls, which participants can then decorate to honor departed loved ones during upcoming DÃa de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations.
Some stories link the creation of the sugar skulls to the Spanish conquest of Mexico, the production of sugar cane and then the arrival of European missionaries, who taught sugar skull art to the indigenous population in the 17th century.
Visitors can experience Arizona history at the annual Flagstaff Heritage Festival set for Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Arizona Historical Society Pioneer Museum, 2340 N. Fort Valley Road. The festival aims to encourage the preservation of traditional craft by demonstrating its application to the present day and the future.
The daylong event is a gathering of artisan, craft and history demonstrators. Demonstrations will include beekeeping, leather work, blacksmithing, candle making, a "ram-to-rug" (shearing, carding, spinning and weaving) show, quilting, ceramics, jewelry making and more.
Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for youth ages 7-17. For more information, visit arizonahistoricalsociety.org/ or call 774-6272.
