The UAE is fast becoming a centre where medical innovations are readily available to patients around the world. Reports that the Ministry of Health and Prevention is planning to build the first Emirates Space Hospital to treat astronauts using nanotechnology should not come as a surprise to anyone. At the Arab Health Exhibition 2018, the UAE unveiled innovative health care initiatives to treat chronic diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and depression. This ties in with the UAE Vision 2021 National Agenda that aims to build a world-class health care system in the country. Already home to some of the world’s most cutting-edge research into medical sciences, the UAE is seen as a pioneer in the region. Introduction of the latest knee joint replacement technology, also known as ‘Arabic Knee’ (which will be a big boon for patients undergoing regenerative and reconstruction surgeries) is another first in the Middle East. Recently the UAE carried out its first ever cadaver heart and kidney transplant in Abu Dhabi.

With a world-class health care infrastructure and systems that meet international standards, in recent years emirates like Dubai have become the preferred destination for specialisations like orthopaedic and sports medicine, dental procedures, preventive medicine and skin care, and plastic surgery. In areas that cover lifestyle related diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular ailments, the UAE health care system’s readiness to deal with them has set new benchmarks, helping the country solidify its place as a hub of quality health care. Top international and regional expertise and medical breakthroughs have further enabled the delivery of world-class treatment — a testament to the UAE’s excellence in patient care and wellness.
