Cape Cod Teen Dies Weeks After Jamaica Crash

A GoFundMe campaign raised money to fly the 19-year-old to a Boston hospital after he was injured in a crash in December.

DENNIS PORT, MA – A teenager from Cape Cod died Thursday, weeks after he was injured in a car crash in Jamaica. Dennis Port resident Joel Ricketts, 19, was visiting family and friends in Manchester, Jamaica on Dec. 18 when the car he was in collided with an oncoming truck, according to a GoFundMe campaign started to fly him from Jamaica to a Boston hospital.

The campaign raised over $38,000, and Ricketts was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital in late December. His friend told the Cape Cod Times he was aware of his family's presence before his health worsened in recent days.

Ricketts, a graduate of Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, had planned on studying architectural engineering at Cape Cod Community College in the spring, according to the Times.
