There was two fatality crashes over the weekend in The News coverage area, including a single-vehicle rollover near Stafford Sunday night due in part to high water and a collision south of Moscow caused when a driver ran a stop sign.

The first crash was about 5:45 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Road 20 and V Road in Stevens County, which is 3 miles south of Moscow.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1994 Chevrolet S-10 pickup driven by Asuncion Jimenez, 66, of Hugoton, was eastbound on Road V and failed to stop at the stop sign at Road 20.

The pickup was struck in its driver’s side door by a 1994 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Delia A. Giron, 35, of Ulysses. Both vehicles ended up in a field to the southeast.

Giron, as well as three passengers in the Tahoe – Maria Rodriguez, 61, Yaretzi Giron, whose age was not listed, and Gabriela Rodriguez, 17, all of Ulysses – were transported to Stevens County Hospital with injuries. All were wearing seat belts, the patrol reported.

Jimenez died at the scene.

The second wreck was at 8:35 p.m. Sunday when Marvin E. Julian, 51, of Stafford, was southbound in a 1998 GMC Yukon “at high speed,” the patrol reported, when he hit a patch of water on U.S. 50 at Southeast 70th Avenue, about a mile east of Stafford.

That caused the truck to travel into a nearby sandy field, where it rolled at least five times, the report stated.

Julian was not wearing a seat belt.

A passenger in the truck, Mason Lee Julian, 13, of Stafford, who was also not restrained, was airlifted to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. His condition was not immediately available.
