Glen Burnie West: Local schools announce President’s Award winners

Several Glen Burnie elementary schools announced the winners of the Presidential Education Awards for outstanding Academic Excellence and Education Achievement during promotional exercises.

The award for Educational Excellence is awarded to students in the fifth and eighth grade with a grade point average from 3.5 to 4.0 during the past two years who also scored at least 85 percent on standardized math and reading tests and who received two teacher recommendations.

The award for Academic Achievement recognizes students who have shown outstanding educational growth, improvement, commitment or intellectual development.

*George Cromwell Elementary School’s Excellence award winners are Colby Adams, Skylar Barton, Sophia Broyles, Madison Christ, Nathaniel Hicks, Sayvion Mayfield, Faith Miller, Cyrus Moreland, Kyle Ridgely, Shania Romero and Brasen Von Moose-Lemin.

Cromwell’s Achievement award winners are Maryam Ali, Jaylene DeRocco, Kaylee Osburn, Tru Powell, Destiny Harden, Brenna Shifflett, Clara Herrarte-Castillo, Dakota Kaplan, Xavier Springer, Kourtney Kightlinger and Travis Jackson.

*Glen Burnie Park Elementary School’s Excellence award winner is Ericka Salazar-Orantes.

*Oakwood Elementary School’s President award winners are Elijah Antonious, Angel Brennes-Cortez, Jordan Gay, Moriah Hollins, Marissa Lamke, Jacob Litz, Karissa Marion, Ella Morgan, Jordan Noratel, Georgia Pickard, Alanna Posey, Henry “Josh” Powell, Nicholas Price, Theody Sajor. *Richard Henry Lee Elementary School ‘s Excellence award winner is Edgardo Cuellar.

R.H. Lee’s Achievement award winners are Kaiden Adams, Sydney Cassese, Emma Cole, Malorie Eslick, Omer Farooq, Alexandra Groves, Mason Huddy, Joshua Johnson, Zachary Kamp, Dominic Kiaunis, Nathan Mack, Jamiera Maynard, Deborah Odi, Parinaaz Patel, Joseph Phillips and Jack Sigmon.

Bilingual story time

The Anne Arundel County Public Library will host a free bilingual story time at 11 a.m. Friday in the center court of Marley Station mall, 7900 Ritchie Highway. Families will enjoy songs, stories, and rhyme and movement activities.

Yard sale

The Ferndale Volunteer Fire Company, 4 S. Broadview Blvd, will hold a yard sale from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Bag bingo

The Catholic Church of Glen Burnie’s Fusion Youth Ministry will sponsor a bag bingo July 15 at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 1451 Furnace Ave.

Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Bingo starts at 7 p.m.

All of the prizes are filled Coach purses and Thirty-One bags. Limited seating. Advance reservations are encouraged.

Admission is $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

Vacation Bible school

Glen Burnie Baptist Church, 7525 Old Stage Road, will offer vacation Bible school classes for children ages 3 to fifth-grade from 6 to 8:30 p.m. July 19 to 24.

This year’s theme is “Everest – Conquering Challenges with God’s Mighty Power.”

Crab feast

The District 32 Democratic Club will host a crab feast fundraiser from 7 to 11 p.m. Aug. 14 at Michael’s Eighth Avenue, 7220 Greyburn Drive.

The event includes Maryland steamed crabs, crab soup, a buffet including steamed shrimp, open bar and music.

Tickets cost $55 and must be bought in advance.

Orioles magic

Community members are invited to join the Ferndale United Methodist Church’s United Methodist Men on Aug. 22 to experience Orioles magic.

The men are selling tickets for the 7:05 p.m. game versus the Minnesota Twins at Camden Yards. At that game, the first 20,000 fans will receive a free Orioles Trucker hat.

Several local volunteer groups offer weekly bingo games through the summer.

Youth meeting

The SPY youth group at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church will meet at 6:30 p.m. Sunday in the youth house, 308 Oak Manor Drive.
