Seven-up Armagh carry too much fizz as Sligo lack bottle for battle

By John Campbell

Armagh may have made a tepid start to their campaign in Division Two of the Lidl Ladies Football National League but they swept into overdrive yesterday when they crushed a helpless Sligo side by 7-20 to 2-5.

The orchard county were in control from the outset and the goals flowed freely with Aimee Mackin (2), Fionnuala Kelly, Blaithin Mackin, Aoife McCoy (2) and Lauren McConville hitting the Sligo net.

Ulster ladies 2017 footballer of the year Aimee Mackin is displaying the form that kept her in the spotlight last year - a good omen for the orchard county.

However, Tyrone fell by the wayside when they were beaten by Tipperary in what was a repeat of their success in last year's All-Ireland intermediate final.

The Red Hands staged a courageous performance but Tipperary's stamina and ability to close out the game proved crucial.

Monaghan, after two successive defeats, got their Division One campaign up and running by getting the better of Kerry by 2-9 to 1-10.

The Monaghan side led by 1-9 to 0-6 at half-time and although the Kingdom pressed hard after the break, the Farney girls managed to hold out to claim the points.

And what about this for a final score? - Donegal 9-17 Westmeath 1-5.

To say it was one-way traffic would be to delve into the realms of understatement!
