A man once accused of a gangland murder was shot while dropping his child off at a primary school this morning.

Ross Monaghan, 35, was treated in hospital after the close range shooting at St George’s Primary in Penilee as classes were about to start.

He was the main suspect in the hunt for the murderer of notorious Kevin “Gerbil” Carroll, an enforcer of the Daniels clan.

A turf war between the Lyons and Daniel crime gang over drugs has resulted in several murders in the north of the city in recent years, the Daily Record reported.

Monaghan was believed to have been dropping his child at school when he was followed into the playground by a man wielding a firearm, possibly a shotgun.

After a loud bang was heard, the suspected gunman made his escape and police arrived at the scene along with concerned parents.

A police helicopter circled overhead as distraught mums demanded that their kids were allowed to be taken home for the day, despite lessons going ahead as planned.

Children were kept indoors at morning breaktime as the school’s head teacher spoke to staff and pupils to assure them it was an isolated incident.

Monaghan was cleared of killing Carroll in 2012 but his friend Billy Paterson, 29, was given 22 years for the murder in 2015 after giving himself up for trial.

Monaghan’s 2012 trial collapsed after the judge ruled there was not enough evidence and raised concerns about the police investigation.

A spokesman for Police Scotland told the Daily Record: "Around 09.05, police received a report of a firearm being discharged in the Penilee area of Glasgow.

"Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances.

"Additional police patrols are in the area."
