The family of a Jackson woman left for dead after being dragged into her yard has filed a lawsuit against the city of Jackson.

The family of the late 67-year-old Helen Harrion alleges the Jackson Police Department did not respond properly after a 911 call.

According to court documents, Harrion called 911 at 2:23 am on July 15 of last year. She was reporting a prowler outside her house on Kingsroad Avenue.

Officers responded but, by the admission of former Police Chief Lindsey Horton, they did not make contact with Harrion or check the area thoroughly enough.

The result, the family says, is the prowler got the opportunity to  beat, strangle, and shoot miss harrion.

Authorities found Harrion’s body 11 hours after the attack. The Hinds County coroner said her neck was snapped, her body had cuts from being dragged out of a window, and it was possible she was sexually assaulted.

29-year-old Alonso Stewart, a neighbor, is charged with capital murder plus attempted burglary for the crime.

But a lawsuit filed on May 12 accuses the city of Jackson of reckless disregard and gross negligence.

“First of all, the 911 call that she made from the operator to the dispatcher – the police coming to the house. They failed her. No one followed up. No one checked on her. And to discover she was dead. Murdered. Brutally murdered that morning. That is just heartbreaking and it’s just fresh everyday,” Angela Harrion, Helen Harrion’s daughter, said.

The lawsuit accuses unnamed officers of not following emergency response protocol and having a callous response to concern that ultimately lead to a death.

There’s no specific amount of money listed for damages their asking for but in talking to WJTV News Channel 12 they say they’re calling for justice.

“She was a mother. She took care of all of us. She would have spent her last on us. I mean, she loved us dearly. And she told, her last thing she told us was ‘live a life of love’,” Karla Lewis, Angela Harrion’s daughter, said.

Jackson City Council President Dekeither Stamps says he is aware of the lawsuit. He deferred comment to the city’s legal team.

So far the city has made no comment on the issue.
