Tavistock have enlisted the help of the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service in their preparations for the pre-season game against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

A crew and fire engine based in the Dartmoor town paid a visit to Langsford Park on Thursday evening to water the playing surface.

The summer heatwave has caused pitches across the south west to become very dry.

So Tavistock club officials called upon the services of the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue service in advance of two high-profile pre-season games.

The visit of Argyle will be followed by that of Neil Warnock’s newly-promoted Premier League club Cardiff City on Monday (7pm).

Warnock, whose home is in south-east Cornwall, regularly takes his teams to play Tavistock at this time of the year.

Argyle have two pre-season games away to South West Peninsula League opposition on Saturday, both with 3pm kick-offs.

One side will take on Tavistock, who were runners-up to Plymouth Parkway in the SWPL Premier Division last season.

Another team – likely to be primarily made up of development squad players – will take on Helston Athletic at Kellaway Park.

Tavistock played their first pre-season match on Tuesday when lost 2-1 away to Southern League Premier Division South club Tiverton Town.

Reece Shanley gave Tavistiock the lead early in the second half at Ladysmead.

However, late goals from former Argyle midfielder River Allen and Levi Landricombe saw the visitors beaten 2-1.

The last time Argyle played a first team pre-season game at Tavistock was in July 2016.

In front of a crowd of 1,660, the Pilgrims won 7-2 with goals from Alex Battle (2), Jimmy Spencer, David Goodwillie, Louis Rooney, Jake Jervis and Graham Carey.

Admission to Langsford Park on Saturday will be £10 for adults, £7 for concessions and £2 for under-16s.

Gates will open at 11am as Tavistock have planned a day of entertainment, which includes a Green Taverners Fan Fest.
