New Brunswick— Rutgers University may lure potential students with its academic rigor and acclaimed faculty, but a new survey says it's also a great school to get a date with someone of a different race.
InterracialMatch, a dating website, named the university the top school in the nation for interracial dating.
"It's not a taboo for them," said Darren Shuster, a public relations specialist representing the site. "Rutgers also happens to have a racially diverse population."
About 45 percent of Rutgers' student population is white, while about 20 percent are Asian, 12 percent are Latino, 10 percent are African-American, six percent are international and seven percent are listed as other, according to the school's website.
Stanford University in California earned the second spot, followed by St. John's University in New York and the University of Houston in Texas.
The New Jersey Institute of Technology wasn't too far behind, claiming the 6th spot.
The dating site examined questionnaires from 15,000 of its users who had an ".edu" in their email, were between the ages of 18 and 25, and answered questions about whether they were in or would consider being part of an interracial relationship.
Other survey findings:
• Of those surveyed, 87.6% of men and 76.6% of women would consider dating somebody from a different race.
• About 88 percent of men who were in an interracial relationship told their families about it, compared to just 19.7 percent of women.
• Close to 98 percent said they sought a racially diverse school to meet people from different cultures.
