Boys basketball: 2019 Section 1 tournament seeds, schedule announced

The Section 1 boys basketball tournament brackets were released Friday afternoon.

Mount Vernon (Class AA), Poughkeepsie (Class A), Putnam Valley (Class B), Tuckahoe (Class C) and Biondi (Class D) earned No. 1 seeds in their respective classes. Mount Vernon was the only defending champion to earn a top seed.

Last year's surprise, Class A champ, Ardsley, has dropped to Class B and will open as the No. 13 seed. Defending Class B champ Briarcliff was seeded No. 7. Class C champ Hamilton was seeded No. 3 and MLK was seeded No. 2 in Class D.

The tournament will open Saturday with outbracket games in Classes A and B. For the larger classes, the first-round games are scheduled to tip off Tuesday (Class B) and Wednesday (Class AA and A), followed by quarterfinal games on Thursday (Class B) and Friday (Class AA and A).

Semifinal and championship games in Classes C and D are also slated for next week: Class D on Friday and Class C final on Saturday, both at Pace University. The Class B final is scheduled for Friday, March 1 and Class AA and A for Saturday, March 2 — also at Pace.

Some or all of Section 1's semifinals are expected to be played at the County Center, including the Class AA, A and B games on Feb. 26-27. Tuckahoe has opted to host Solomon Schechter in their Class C semifinal on Thursday. Athletic director Austin Goldberg said it was "best for our team an community to play one more game at home."

The sites for the Class AA, A and B semifinals won't be finalized until after the quarterfinals are complete. However, the higher remaining seed in each game can determine the site for that game and most of the top seeds have said they intend on playing at the County Center.
