A fugitive suspected of killing his partner has been arrested after allegedly tattooing the date of her death on his arm and the words 'Thank you for everything'.

The 22-year-old man was arrested at a hotel in the Costa Brava resort of Lloret de Mar, north-east Spain, for the murder of his 20-year-old girlfriend, named only as Lisa H.

Police released pictures of the inking, which features the name Lisa and her date of birth, as well as a cross with her apparent date of death and the words Gracias por todo.

Officers also released footage of the moment of his dramatic detention in boxer shorts, which followed a manhunt across Europe sparked by a selfie he took next to the Eiffel Tower that he posted on his alleged victim's Facebook.

The man, who was not named by Spanish police but was identified by German press as Dominik Riedl, is alleged to have slit his girlfriend's throat and left her body in rubbish bags at their home in Freyung, Germany, at the end of last month.

Spanish officers said he then fled with the couple's toddler child. The youngster was discovered safe and well during the arrest and has been taken into local authority care.

Spanish National Police confirmed in a statement: 'Spanish National Police have arrested a German fugitive suspected of slitting his girlfriend's throat and fleeing to Spain with his 18-month-old son.

'The crime he was wanted for took place at the end of last month when German police found the body of the victim, a woman aged 20, in rubbish bags at the couple's home.'

Revealing Spanish police were tipped off early on in the investigation that he could be in the country, it added: 'Throughout the investigation, the main police objective has been to find and safely rescue the young boy.

'When he was arrested the alleged killer was sporting several tattoos, including one with the name of his partner, her date of birth, a cross with the date of 27 October 2016 and the inscription 'Gracias por todo' in Spanish.

'This most recent and macabre one with the October 27th date on it can be interpreted as the date of her death.'

Spanish police say shaven-headed Riedl allegedly took his girlfriend's phone so he could update her Facebook and other social media sites in a bid to throw officers off the scent.

After posting a picture of him and his son next to the Eiffel Tower in Paris on November 7 he is believed to have headed to Spain, passing through the northern city of Valladolid and spending a night at a hotel in Tarifa in the south of the country.

The Volkswagen Golf he used has been seized and will be examined for possible clues to Lisa's killing by specialist forensic officers.

He is thought to be facing up to 15 years in jail if found guilty of her homicide.

German daily Bild posted a picture of Riedl with his son in his arms earlier this week and wrote: 'Lisa's alleged murderer is now being hunted across Europe.

'Police are using this photo to search for 22-year-old Dominik Riedl. According to BILD sources Riedl sent this shot to Lisa's mum.

'Apparently the photo was taken in Paris and sent by SMS.'
