The Iowa DCI says Hurley shot at officers, who fired back. <I LOOKED OUT THE WINDOW AND THERE WERE POLICE EVERYWHERE.> KCCI has learned 45 year old Matthew Hurley was stranger to police. Court papers show a list of drug and alcohol charges dating back to 2013. In Polk County he pleaded guilty to a controlled substance violation and was sentenced to prison. That same year - Story County authorities arrested him for possession of meth with the intent to deliver. They say he was selling the drug out of his home - located nearby an elementary school. And in 2017 - Woodbury County deputies pulled Hurley over for drunk driving. In his car - they found an open container of alcohol, a glass pipe and brass knuckles. The Iowa DCI has also identified the two officers involved in the shooting. Iowa State Patrol Sgt. A Wall Lake man who died after a gunfire exchange with officers in Webster County had a history of drug- and alcohol-related charges, according to online court documents. Officials with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said 45-year-old Matthew Hurley died Monday night after engaging in a gunfight while driving away from officers who were responding to a domestic disturbance call just outside Fort Dodge.Tire tracks still mark where the deadly chase ended along Highway 175 between Dayton and Harcourt. Aaron Schmidt and Calhoun County Sheriff’s Deputy Chase Goodman, who were both placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, which is standard procedure. The officers saw Hurley’s vehicle and tried stopping it before a chase began. Deputies said Hurley started shooting at them, and they fired back. Hurley crashed into a farm field, where authorities found him dead inside the vehicle.
