A man was killed in a single-vehicle wreck on I-85 Thursday night after losing control of his car while driving at a high rate of speed, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The wreck occurred at 6:42 p.m. at mile marker 1, Trooper J.H. Smart said. The man was traveling alone from South Carolina into North Carolina and may have been returning to his home is Salisbury from work, Smart said.

"According to witnesses, they are saying he was going approximately 90 mph," Smart said. That stretch of I-85 has a speed limit of 65 mph.

The man was driving a 2011 Nissan Maxima. He hit a guardrail and then went up an embankment before the car started rolling over two or three times. He was wearing a seat belt.

"It appears he just lost control of the vehicle," Smart said.

Smart reported he was a Hispanic adult male but would not disclose his name pending notification of family members.
