What events and schools have been canceled or postponed in Green Country due to coronavirus concerns?

The following are official news releases regarding updates to events and school schedules, including changes due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Due to the increasing spread of COVID-19 and expanding restrictions on domestic and international travel, and in accordance with national, state and local governments prohibiting large group gatherings, the Monster Jam events scheduled on September 26 & 27, 2020 at BOK Center in Tulsa have been cancelled.

Oklahoma City, Okla. (April 20, 2020) - The deadCenter Film Festival will celebrate its 20th anniversary from June 11-21, with an extended 10-day schedule, half-price passes and more movies and panels than ever before. Eddie, the definitive documentary about OSU coaching legend Eddie Sutton, leads the slate of 140 films from around the world and across Oklahoma that will premiere during the festival.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, deadCenter Film is moving the entire festival slate of award-winning films, filmmaker panels, celebrity discussions, screenplay readings, and film classes online for 2020, utilizing the latest streaming and community engagement technologies. deadCenter Film is also planning to offer pop-up drive-in movie experiences for passholders and sponsors throughout the festival. Originally slated for June 11-14, the organizers of the deadCenter Film Festival will announce additional public screenings at Scissortail Park as shelter-in-place restrictions allow.

“We are so excited to proceed with our 20th annual film festival and celebrate these awesome filmmakers and films,” said Executive Director Lance McDaniel. “Moving the festival online will allow our passholders and sponsors to watch more movies and uniquely interact with a wider range of celebrities and industry leaders than ever before.”

1,600 films were considered for the 2020 festival, making it the most competitive year ever. Of the 140 films selected to screen at the festival, 20 are feature-length movies and 120 are short films. Thirty of the chosen films were made in Oklahoma or by Oklahoma filmmakers.

Christopher Hunt and David Tester, the filmmakers behind Eddie, won Best Oklahoma Short Film at the deadCenter Film Festival in 2015 and 2017. Several other award winners are returning with new films this year, including Sterlin Harjo (Best Oklahoma Film 2009) with his new documentary Love and Fury; Ryan Staples Scott (Best Oklahoma Film 2015) with his action film Robot Riot; and Jacob Burns (Best Oklahoma Film 2016) with his new thriller Shifter.

deadCenter Film Festival is Oklahoma’s largest film festival, recognized as one of the “Top 20 Coolest Film Festivals in the World” by MovieMaker Magazine. More than 35,000 people attended deadCenter Film Festival screenings in 2019, generating an economic impact of approximately $5 million for Oklahoma City.

Officials with Saint Francis Tulsa Tough say the event has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The event was originally scheduled for June 12-14 2020. Officials say that the organizers looked at the option for rescheduling later in the year, but decided that canceling the event was the better choice.

Officials say that there were several factors that led to the cancellation of the event:

• Necessary permits for Saint Francis Tulsa Tough are on pause right now with no guarantee that they will be granted in time for the event.
• Some critical vendors are unable to commit the resources necessary to produce the event.
• Healthcare providers are working beyond their capacity, and there is no guarantee they would be available to provide medical services key to ensuring the safety of participants and spectators.
• The current registrations will be automatically deferred, officials say, to the Saint Francis Tulsa Tough on June 11-13, 2021. If anyone would like to request a refund, they may do so, officials say.

Officials with Union High School announced that the Class of 2020 graduation ceremony has been rescheduled to Thursday, July 23 at the BOK Center in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The event is set to take place at 7:30 p.m. The rescheduled date is "contingent upon all bans being lifted by the city and state in time for the event to take place," officials say.

Below is the official press release:Union High School has rescheduled its graduation ceremony for the Class of 2020 to Thursday, July 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the BOK Center, 200 South Denver Ave W., in response to social distancing measures put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This new date is contingent upon all bans being lifted by the city and state in time for the event to take place. Approximately 1,073 seniors are eligible to walk across the stage.

“Given this year’s unprecedented disruption, I can think of no class more deserving of an exceptional graduation experience than Union’s Class of 2020,” said Superintendent Dr. Kirt Hartzler. “Our fondest wish is to celebrate our graduating like they have never been celebrated before, and for their families to give them an appropriate send-off in person. In setting this date, however, we also recognize that safety measures for large public gatherings may still be in place. For that reason, we will make alternate plans for a ‘virtual graduation,’ in the event we would need to cancel the July 23 ceremony for safety reasons. Regardless of the venue, I want to assure seniors and their families that we will celebrate in style, whether in person or virtually.”

In the event restrictions for public gatherings have not been lifted by May 30, Union would make the decision to proceed with a virtual graduation ceremony that would be live-streamed the evening of Monday, June 15.

“A virtual graduation is not our preference,” said Dr. Hartzler. “We just need to have an alternate plan in place should it become necessary. Regardless of the way we ultimately end up celebrating the achievement of our graduates, I guarantee we will do it The Union Way.”

Students will pick up their caps, gowns and accessories on April 21 and 22 from noon to 4 p.m. on the north side of Union High School. More information will be forthcoming about a rehearsal in preparation for graduation.

Organizers have not yet determined the status of the Graduation Celebration, an all-night safe, drug and alcohol-free after-party that has become a Union tradition.

Due to the ongoing protective measures put in place to help slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the 2020 Kristin Chenoweth Broadway Bootcamp has been canceled. “The safety and health of our campers, their families, and our whole team is our number one priority,” said Kristin Chenoweth. “We were so excited to welcome all of you amazing campers from across the country, but we know that 2021 will be bigger and better than ever!” The camp, held each summer in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, for the past five years at Kristin’s namesake theatre, has attracted a who’s who of Broadway professionals both from the stage and behind the scenes, including Tony, Emmy and Grammy winners. These professionals have acted as teachers, mentors, counselors and guides for the aspiring performing arts students. “This year we received more applications and audition self-tapes than ever before. It was also going to be the first year that we would be accepting applicants and students from across the nation," said Chenoweth. “So much talent–which makes me even more excited about our 2021 Bootcamp, here in Broken Arrow, OK. Our team of Broadway professionals will be here and waiting to greet you and put you through your paces. On Monday, March 30th 2020, Tulsa Ballet announced the cancelation of all public events, as well as the rescheduling the last two programs of its 2019|2020 season.

This decision was made in order to comply with CDC guidelines, as well as the State of Oklahoma and Mayor GT Bynum’s ordinances, during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Artistic Director Marcello Angelini is reworking the next two seasons to accommodate the collection of great works that were to be performed during the next two months. Mr. Angelini has already announced that Vendetta: a Mafia Story, which was set to make its American premiere March 26-29 at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center, will see its debut in the fall of 2020. The much-anticipated Ma Cong’s World Premiere of Carmen will close the Ballet’s upcoming season at the Lorton Performance Center in May of 2021. Per recommendations from the CDC and the Governor of the State of Oklahoma, we have come to the difficult decision to cancel the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival until 2021.

Lighter news: The Castle hosts many exciting events outside of the Renaissance Festival. Muscogee (Creek) Nation Principal Chief David Hill and River Spirit Casino Resort Chief Executive Officer Pat Crofts announced today the extended temporary closure of all nine Muscogee (Creek) Nation Casinos, including River Spirit Casino Resort until April 15, 2020.

The temporary closure began 10 days ago on Monday, March 16.

Muscogee (Creek) Nation Principal Chief David Hill and River Spirit Casino Resort Chief Executive Officer Pat Crofts announced today the extended temporary closure of all nine Muscogee (Creek) Nation Casinos, including River Spirit Casino Resort until April 15, 2020.

While River Spirit Casino Resort and the other casino properties had no reported cases of COVID-19, the temporary closure is a result of guidelines issued by the National Center for Disease Control to reduce exposure to the virus. “As always, the Muscogee (Creek) Nation prioritizes the health and well-being of our citizens, our employees and our guests above all else,” said Chief Hill. The temporary closure began 10 days ago on Monday, March 16.
“We are committed to following the suggestions issued by federal health officials to ensure we are safeguarding the public. Challenging times require tough decisions, but you cannot make progress without making decisions. Extending the temporary closure of our casinos is an example of how the Nation can do its part during this epic crisis.” Chief Hill and officials confirmed the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Casinos and River Spirit Casino Resort will continue to pay its 2,200 employees through April 15.

Unfortunately, due to current circumstances, we are experiencing a "HOLD" at this time. Clark is unable to resume classes and rehearsals this week on March 23rd as we had hoped. We will follow the Tulsa Public School Closures until April 6th, and reevaluate. If at any time before then it seems safe to resume meeting, we will notify you immediately. However, since Clark serves well over 30 schools in the Tulsa area, we will proceed with an abundance of caution in order to keep our Clarkies and their families safe.This is a phrase we hear often in scene work and technical rehearsals in theatre.

We encourage you to stay creative, stay positive, and share the creativity!

At this time, it is crucial the Chamber does their part to help reduce the transmission of COVID19. “We are all having to make difficult decisions in this time. As we all pray and hope that the closures are not necessary through May, the Broken Arrow Chamber does not feel it would be wise to encourage the gathering of this size even if the restrictions are lifted by May. We expect that in September we will be able to come together as a community and celebrate what we have overcome,” states Jennifer Conway, President and CEO of the Broken Arrow Chamber of Commerce and EDC.

New dates for the annual tradition are September 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th. In the midst of heightened concern, health and safety are the Chamber’s top priorities and at the heart of every decision made. The festival schedule is as follows: Thursday, September 3: 5pm to 10pm Friday, September 4: 5pm to 11pm Saturday, September 5: 10am to 11pm Sunday, September 6: 12pm to 6pm *Rides close 1 hour before festival closes* On Saturday, September 5th, the festival’s main events will take place.

The Oklahoma Railway Museum is now closed to the General Public through at least April 22nd. Depending on circumstances, this closure may be extended. It is no longer prudent to continue to offer an outdoor gathering place for the community, given the rapid spread of the coronavirus. We’re truly saddened to have to make such a decision, but we ask for your understanding in these difficult times. Oklahoma Railway Museum has not been directly affected by COVID-19. The decision to postpone services was based on new public safety guidelines released by health officials at all levels of government. We continue to monitor the constantly-changing situation carefully and respond accordingly. All of our scheduled public activities and events during this same time have been cancelled. This includes train rides, guided tours, exhibits and birthday parties. Train ride tickets will be honored at all future regular train rides, not including special trains. We will be happy to rescheduled your event or issue a refund or per your request. Also please consider donating to the museum during this trying time. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes for your visit to the museum and appreciate your patience during this time. We appreciate all of your past support, and look forward to once again welcoming you back to the Oklahoma Railway Museum. In the meantime, please stay safe and look out for your loved ones. Due to curtailment of activities and in the interest of safety of the public and supporters of the Will Rogers Memorial Foundation, the Foundation announced cancellation of the May 2 Will Rogers Dog Iron Polo on the Prairie Charity Event. Planners will consider setting a Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch polo match at another time. The Kentucky Derby, which was to be a part of the same day’s activities, has been postponed. The Will Rogers Memorial Museum in Claremore and Birthplace Ranch at Oologah are closed to visitors until Tuesday, March 31. Special events are cancelled or postponed until after April 14, said Tad Jones, Museum executive director. For the latest information regarding the Museums and activities, visit willrogers.com.
