Firefighters spent more than an hour battling a large barn blaze which sent black smoke billowing into the air.

Two crews were called to the outbuilding at Ty Gwyn Caravan Park on Towyn Road in Abergele just after 3.10pm today.

Police attended the scene and a contraflow system was put into place for traffic on the A548 while the fire crews dealt with the incident.

A North Wales Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “We were called to reports of a small barn fire on Towyn Road, Abergele at 3.13pm.

“The fire involved timber material and was caused due to some metal sheets being cut and sparks catching fire.

“There was 20% fire damage to the building which covers 26 square metres. We used two hose reel jets and a hydrant. The cause was accidental.”

The fire was extinguished just before 4.40pm.

Pictures from the scene showed thick plumes of smoke coming from the building, with some damage visible.

A spokesman for the caravan park said: “There was a small incident that was dealt with.

“Nobody was hurt and there was fortunately no real damage to anything.

“The emergency services were very efficient and they did their job very well.”

Nobody was injured during the blaze.

Ty Gwyn Caravan Park has bases for static caravans as well as having an area for seasonal touring caravans.

There are also chalets which can be rented out.
