Virgil van Dijk is trying to take the Holland defence to new heights in training. Quite literally.

His impressive form for club and country has seen Van Dijk take the armband for Holland and during a heading drill on Wednesday the defender led by example.

With the ball dangling barely a foot from the ceiling of the team's training base, the centre back took a run up and launched himself into the air to head the ball.

The amazing feat was filmed in slow motion by his Holland team-mate Ryan Babel and posted on Instagram.

'Just another day in the air for @virgilvandijk,' the former Liverpool forward wrote alongside the video.

Holland are looking to rebuild having embarrassingly missed out on qualification for the World Cup in Russia over the summer.

On Friday their resurgence will be given the ultimate acid test, when they welcome world champions France to Rotterdam for a Nations League clash.

Van Dijk and Co are eyeing revenge having suffered defeat in the reverse fixture, while on Monday they will be looking to do the double over Germany.

France currently top Group 1 of League A having picked up seven points from three matches, while Holland sit second on three points and Germany face relegation.
