Boat parade sets sail June 18

KENNEBUNK — By land or by sea, all are welcome to participate in the first-ever River Lights Boat Parade on Saturday, June 18 as part of LAUNCH! weekend June 17-19. 

The first-ever parade on the Kennebunk River will start at 8:30 p.m., and all boats decorated in festive lights are welcome. Viewing from land will be ideal from locations between the breakwater and the Mathew Lanigan Bridge. Boats will meet by Colony Beach, then parade up the river and turn around in front of Federal Jack's, and return to the breakwater area.

Prizes for the best decorated boat include a $200 cash first prize, $100 cash second prize and $50 cash third prize.

There will also be a non-motorized Paddle Parade in the basin, with a $75 prize for the best display. Buildings (businesses and private homes) and docked boats can also light up, and be eligible for a $75 prize. Sign up by calling The Chamber at 967-0857. On Sunday, June 19, a traditional Blessing of the Fleet will be held at 8 a.m. in Cape Porpoise Harbor. The Rev. Ruth Merriam of the Church on the Cape will preside.
