Four Blue Devils Receive All-ACC Academic Accolades

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Led by the ACC Women's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year Virginia Elena Carta, the Duke women's golf program featured four Blue Devils on the 2019 All-ACC Academic Team, which was announced Wednesday by the league office. Other Duke selections included sophomore Jaravee Boonchant, sophomore Miranda Wang and freshman Gina Kim.

A four-time women's golf All-ACC Academic Team member, Carta earned four All-ACC selections over her Duke career. A native of Udine, Italy, Carta was the 2016 NCAA Individual Champion and helped lead the Blue Devils to the 2019 NCAA team title in Fayetteville, Ark.

As a senior, she notched a 73.57 stroke average and collected her second collegiate victory at the Landfall Tradition. Carta had two top 10 finishes on the year and went 2-1 in match play to conclude the NCAA Championship. She received a degree in Environmental Sciences and Policy in May.

Out of 12 ACC Women's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year selections, a Duke golfer as earned the honor nine times.

Duke and Virginia Tech led the way with four honorees each, while Florida State, North Carolina and Virginia each had three.

It marked the second straight year both Boonchant and Wang received All-ACC Academic Team accolades.

A product of Bangkok, Thailand, Boonchant turned in a team-best 72.17 stroke average to go along with seven top 10 finishes on the season. She placed tied for seventh at the NCAA Championship and knocked off the No. 1 ranked amateur in the world, Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest, in the NCAA title match to lift Duke past the Demon Deacons, 3-2. She is planning on majoring in Statistical Science.

Wang clinched the winning point in the NCAA Championship, 3-2, victory over Wake Forest. She competed in 11 tournaments and turned in a 75.00 stroke average. Wang, who is from Beijing, China, played some of her best golf of the season in the NCAAs as she tied for 19th overall with rounds of 75, 72 and 78. She is majoring in Public Policy & Psychology.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award was established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the award must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic team, a student-athlete, regardless of classification, must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
