Millburn golf, boys tennis looks to repeat as county champions

Wednesday marks the start of the Essex County tournaments in both golf and boys tennis, two tournaments that were both won by Millburn last spring.

The Millers will play at Weequahic Park Golf Course as one of 14 teams in the tournament, beginning at 8:00 am. Last season saw Millburn hold on for a thrilling victory in the tournament with an overall team score of 315. Millburn held off Montclair by one shot and Seton Hall Prep, who finished third with a score of 318.

In boys tennis, Millburn enters the tournament as the second seed in the bracket, behind only Livingston. The Millers will take on 15th seed Nutley in the first round and the winner of Glen Ridge and West Essex in the quarterfinals, should Millburn advance.

The Millers dropped just three games in the entire tournament last season as the top seed. Millburn shut out 17th seed Belleville and eighth seed Glen Ridge, 5-0, to reach the semifinals in 2017. The Millers took care of fourth seeded Newark Academy in the semifinals, 3-2, before a 4-1 victory in the county final over second seeded Montclair.
