Even with the World Boxing Council and countless fans wanting the contest to take place this year, it seems Canelo and his team aim to wait until the Mexican fully grows into the 160 pound divison.
De La Hoya tweeted his meeting with promoter Tom Loeffler recently, although the K2 promoter has since moved to issue a denial to any such agreeement.

“It would be great if we had some binding agreement, but we don’t,” Loeffler told Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports.
“I did meet with Golden Boy and they want to build the fight and shoot for the fall of 2017. From our side, we’re going to continue to try to put together the biggest fights for Gennady. Both sides want to make the fight, but it is a mischaracterization to say there is a deal.”
At this point in time, two-weight world title holder Canelo is campaigning at around 155 pounds and will aim to move up gradually, rather than mix it with the best middleweight in the world right away.
Canelo’s victory over Miguel Cotto now seems a hollow one after the 25 year-old had originally promised to meet ‘GGG’ if victorious over the Puerto Rican – before backing out when the WBC set a purse bid deadline.
Both fighters are due to return to action this September, with Canelo linked to facing David Lemieux or Gabriel Rosado and Golovkin to mandatory challenger Danny Jacobs and rated contender Chris Eubank Jr.
The agreement doesn’t help Golovkin in his bid to clean up the division before jumping to 168 pounds as bouts against Canelo and WBO belt holder Billy Joe Saunders continue to elude the pound for pound star.
Options against Jacobs or Eubank – either in the US or UK – in the latter’s case, are attractive options for Golovkin, but at 34 years of age, the time may be right for a run at the best of the super middleweight ranks.
