Former Fishers Police Chief Mitchell Thompson plead guilty Tuesday to one charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person.

Thompson and his attorney John Kautzman agreed to a plea that would place Thompson on temporary probation until he completed alcohol counseling and paid the corresponding fines.

Thomspon has already started the counseling, Kautzman said.

"It was a fairly standard plea agreement for a first-time offense of driving while intoxicated," Kautzman said.

The Marion County prosecutor's office charged Mitchell in August with one count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person and operating a vehicle with an alcohol content level of more than .08, both misdemeanors. The second charge was dismissed in the plea agreement, Kautzman said.

The charges come from a July 27 crash involving Thompson and two other cars. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police said Thompson's 2012 Infiniti rear-ended a Jeep Liberty in the northbound lane of Keystone Avenue at 95th Street just before 11 p.m, causing the Jeep to hit another car and roll over.

Thompson took a breathalyzer test at the scene and registered a reading of 0.126 percent. A blood alcohol content level of 0.08 percent or higher is considered legally drunk in Indiana.

Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness removed Thompson as chief shortly after the crash, and he was suspended with pay until the DUI charges are resolved.
