Gov’t Mule hosted their annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival late-night show at the Mahalia Jackson Theater yesterday. The Revivalists opened the night, which doubled as the final date on their spring support tour for the veteran jamband.

As is tradition, numerous guests sat in with Gov’t Mule throughout their two-set performance. The quartet opened their show with a cover of “Are You Experienced?” and brought out hometown hero Ivan Neville to play keyboards on a cover of Bob Marley’s “Lively Up Yourself” later in the first set.

The real parade of guests kicked in during Gov’t Mule’s second set. First off, The Blues Revolution guitarist Jonathon “Boogie” Long, Revivalists saxophonist Rob Ingraham and Revivalists multi-instrumentalist Mike Girardot all emerged for a cover of Allen Toussaint’s “On Your Way Down.” Next, blues harmonica ace Smoky Greenwell—who played with Warren Haynes early in his career as part of the band Blues Co-Op and currently works with Johnny Neel—joined Ingraham, Girardot, Revivalists guitarist Zack Feinberg, Revivalists singer David Shaw, Revivalists pedal steel player Ed Williams and the members of Gov’t Mule for The Rolling Stones’ “Ventilator Blues.” Then, veteran organist Ike Stubblefield took the stage for “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home.”

Soon after, both Greenwell and guitarist Alvin “Youngblood” Hart helped Gov’t Mule on a run from “The Hunter” into “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl” and then, back into the end of “The Hunter.” Finally, Gov’t Mule welcomed back Stubblefield and brought out funky Meters guitarist Brian Stoltz for a tease-heavy version of “Get Behind The Mule” during their encore.

Gov’t Mule will perform at Memphis, TN’s Beale Street Music Festival this evening.
