WINDERMERE pulled two points clear at the top of North League Division Two West with a well-earned 6-2 win at Alderley Edge.

Mere were a goal down within the first minute, but quickly rallied to be level at 2-2 by the interval thanks to a penalty corner goal from Will Dolman and a strike from free play by Harry Jackson.

They came out all guns blazing in the second half, and using their better fitness, they stamped their authority on the game to add a further four goals, while conceding only one more themselves.

Joe Kay, Tom Whitehead, Ed Brownell and Seb Flint all netted in the dominant second period.

Adam Whitehead was awarded man-of-the-match.

There was success too for Windermere Ladies, as they gained their first Central Lancashire Women’s League Premier Division in emphatic style, 7-3 over Southport.

Kitty Brownell showed her predatory prowess with four close-range goals, with others from Hannah Clark, Cat Drury and Lucy Hill.

Mereleft a plucky Southport side trailing after being level at half-time.

Stronger teamwork and quicker ball-speed after the interval gave Mere a 6-3 lead, and great approach play by Evie Turner was clinically finished by Hill to complete the scoreline.

At the other end, goalkeeper Maisie Prescott made a crucial late save and Hannah Swainson dived on the line behind her to block a second shot.

There was no such joy for Windermere men's seconds, who had most of the play but could not trouble a wily, deep-lying Formby fourths defence at Troutbeck Bridge.

A penalty corner goal right on half-time, and then a spectacular shot by their skipper, gave Formby a 2-0 win despite a tireless performance by Jamie Hill and Keiran Armer in Mere’s midfield.
