KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team was unable to hold on to a second period lead, falling to No. 19-ranked Western Michigan University, 5-4, Saturday night (Oct. 20) at Lawson Ice Arena.

Western Michigan jumped out to an early lead less than two minutes into the contest. Austin Rueschoff capitalized on a U-M turnover in the defensive zone to give the Broncos a 1-0 advantage at the 1:51 mark of the opening period.

The Wolverines evened the score at the 6:34 mark when sophomore defenseman Quinn Hughes ripped a wrist shot from the point in front of a crowded net for his first goal of the campaign.

Midway through the first period (12:25) Western Michigan regained the lead on a five-on-three advantage when Hugh McGing's shot made its way through traffic from above the left faceoff circle.

Michigan had its own opportunity on a two-man advantage with 2:32 left in the opening period, but was unable to capitalize despite multiple opportunities on the Broncos net.

Western Michigan added to its lead 2:18 into the second period when Ethen Frank scooped up a loose puck in the U-M zone off a failed breakout attempt, then proceeded through the slot to find the back of the net.

Working on their seventh power-play opportunity of the night, the Wolverines finally capitalized on the man-advantage at the 8:48 mark of the second period when senior forward Brendan Warren buried the rebound off a Luke Martin shot from the point. The goal, Warren's first of the season, cut Western's lead back to one goal (3-2).

The momentum shifted in U-M's favor as they scored twice within the last four minutes of the period to take their first lead of the night. Sophomore forward Josh Norris scored his first of the season off a one-timer from classmate Dakota Raabe to even the score at 3. Junior forward Nick Pastujov would give Michigan a 4-3 lead heading into the last intermission when he scored his third goal in as many games, putting away a rebound off a Jack Summers' shot with less than a minute left in the stanza.

The Broncos evened the score at 4 when Colt Conrard scored on another five-on-three advantage in the early stages of the third period. They would regain the lead at 6:39 when Josh Passolt found the near side of the net on a shot from the left faceoff circle, which would stand as the final score.

The Maize and Blue will return home next weekend to play two games against St. Lawrence on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26-27. Both games are schedule to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena.

Michigan will be hosting its annual ALS Awareness Game on Friday night as the program shows its support for former Michigan hockey player Scott Matzka (1997-2001) in his fight against ALS. U-M defeated St. Lawrence last season to kick off the Mel Pearson era with a 3-1 triumph in Canton, New York.
