GULF SHORES, Ala. (WIAT) — The Gulf Shores Police Department responded to a traffic collision involving a car and two bicyclists on May 27.
The collision occurred around 9 a.m. in the 2100 block of County Road 2. A white Ford Mustang collided with two bicyclists on the southbound side of the roadway a few miles from where the couple was staying at the State Park Campground.
“We do have posted bicycle signs, but it’s not to encourage people to ride on the side of the road, it’s basically to let the vehicles know that there are going to be people on the side of the road,” said Lisa Larraway, State Park Director.
John Richard Vos, 73, has passed away from his injuries Thursday morning. Augugusta Forbes Vos, 50, is expected to make a full recovery. Both victims are from Vestavia Hills.
Augusta Vos was transported by MedStar Ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center.
There is no evidence of alcohol or drug use by the driver, Blake Ashton Foote, 21 of Pensacola. Foote was said to have fallen asleep at the wheel. He remained at the scene until the preliminary investigation was complete and has been cooperative during the investigation.
GSPD are continuing the investigation with assistance from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Anyone with information should contact Detective Sergeant Wodruff at 251-968-2431.
