The downward trend in COVID-19 cases continues in the two largest metropolises but Osaka Prefecture topped Tokyo on May 17.
The Osaka prefectural government said it confirmed 3,932 fresh infections on the day, while 3,663 new cases were logged in Tokyo.
The latest figure in Osaka Prefecture was 308 lower than the number from the previous Tuesday.
In Tokyo, the figure was down 788 from the previous Tuesday as well.
The daily average of new cases over the week through May 17 in the capital was 3,753.7, or 109.6 percent of the average for the preceding week.
Officials also confirmed nine related deaths in Tokyo. They were all patients in their 70s or older.
No deaths were reported in Osaka Prefecture on the day.
