ASHEBORO, N.C. — Sunday's winter weather has forced NC Zoo officials to close the Asheboro destination through Tuesday, Dec. 11.

Once the storm passes, the zoo has more than 500 acres and five miles of trails to clear before it can reopen to the public, according to a news release. The zoo’s priority, the release says, is to ensure the safety of its staff and essential personnel as they continue to care onsite for more than 1,600 animals.

While crews were cleaning up from the storm, some of the animals were taking it all in, including Nikita, the polar bear, who was photographed Sunday standing tall. According to the zoo's Facebook page, he weighs in around 1,200 pounds and stands about 10 feet tall! Check him out!
