AC/DC, Aerosmith, Tom Petty and Sammy Hagar are among the many rock, soul and pop artists whose archived live performances from the legendary 'The Midnight Special' television program will be included on a new 11-DVD box set from StarVista Entertainment and Time Life.

Due Sept. 8, the upcoming DVD release of 'The Midnight Special' will feature more than 130 live performances along with five hours of bonus features and a 32-page collector's book. Other featured artists included in the upcoming set include Peter Frampton, Fleetwood Mac, Blondie and Heart.

The brainchild of television producer Burt Sugarman, 'The Midnight Special' was a veritable late-night variety show. Airing immediately after 'The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson,' on Friday evenings, 'The Midnight Special' offered viewers live musical performances from the likes of GenesisTed Nugent and Roy Orbison as well as previously recorded segments.

The show's pilot originally aired on Aug. 19, 1972 as a 90-minute special whose purpose was to encourage young people to vote in the Presidential elections to be held later that year. six months later, in Feb. 1973, 'The Midnight Special' made its premiere as a weekly show.

Besides the parade of awesome live performances, one thing that helped make the show unique was the fact that for the bulk of the time it was on the air, it featured a different guest host each week. The only exception to this was an eight-month period from mid-1975 through March 1976 when Helen Reddy served as the show's full-time host. 'The Midnight Special' aired until 1981, leaving behind a one-of-a-kind collection of live performances from some of the biggest names in rock history. As former guest performer Alice Cooper explains quite simply in the above trailer, 'It's a soundtrack for your life.'
