Case Western Reserve University dental students headlining free clinic event
Free exams, x-rays being offered September 17 and 18
CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Case Western Reserve University dental students and residents will be performing free exams and x-rays during it’s free “Admitting Days” event on September 17 and 18. Optional cleanings will be offered at a cost of $25.
Services are for those at least 18 years old and are by appointment only. There are two time slots available: 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The number of appointments is limited. Those interested are asked to call 216-368-6800.
“This is a way for Case to reach into the community,” said dental student Monica Torres. “It’s a way of telling the community, ‘Here we are. Please come in (and) get checked.’”
The students are stressing the importance of seeing a dentist every six months. The free clinic is designed to reach new and undeserved populations.
“We’re in a really good position to sort of detect issues like high blood pressure (and) other systemic issues and refer them to a physician to get those taken care of,” said dental student Sean Roberts.
The school said each year they treat more than 8,000 patients, including university students, employees and the general public, at discounted prices.
As part of the free “admitting days”, patients will receive a $100 service voucher when they sign a treatment plan.
Torres said getting to work with patients one-on-one is a blessing. She originally went to school for psychology. She fell in love with dentistry after finding work at a local office.
She and Roberts graduate this year.
“It feels surreal,” Torres said about graduating. “We’ve been through a lot with patients and really love it here. It’s something we’re looking forward to- preparing to see patients out in the real world.”
