Hike Estell Manor Park
Sunday, Nov. 22 at 11 a.m.
Part of the Atlantic County Park System, Estelle Manor Park has a well-defined trail system, including a 1.5-mile boardwalk, a great nature center, access to the tidally active Great Egg Harbor River, and two playgrounds. The hike will last 1½ to 2 hours. The trails tend to be sandy and, though the park has no major elevations, expect to be walking on uneven surfaces. Explore the Pinelands habitat and stop to see how this area played an important role in history.
These parklands were once a glassworks and a munitions-production facility during WWI. See the ruins of these activities and begin to imagine what it was like when more than 1,000 soldiers and 400 families once lived in the area.
Hike Estell Manor Park is at 109 State Highway 50, Mays Landing. Meet at the Warren E. Fox Nature Center by the entrance to the park. The nature center includes bathroom facilities, exhibits on the animals and plants of the park, including some live animals. Consider bringing lunch so you can stay and enjoy one of the park's picnic areas or take advantage of the park's free bike lending program.
