Christian comic and singer Tim Hawkins will return March 23 to Columbus for an encore.
Hawkins, a nationally touring performer popular with both believers and non-believers, sold out two shows in March 2016 at The Ridge church.
Organizers expect his latest show in the 770-seat venue at The Ridge to sell out as well, although good seats remain several months ahead of the show date, said James Young, The Ridge’s music pastor.
The artist’s music includes spoofs of a range of mainstream musical acts. That includes Kansas’ “Dust in the Wind,” Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird” and a variety of tunes he has written for aging rockers, from Neil Diamond to Eric Clapton.
“Classic rock’s the best,” Hawkins has said.
Guitarists especially have taken note of the serious instrumental skills amid his silliness. Occasionally, he will include a foray or two of an interlude, highlighting his prowess with his McPherson.
He is best known in recent years for spoof-oriented tunes such as “Cletus, Take the Reel” and “The Chick-fil-A Song.”
He has also been known to veer into a freestyle rap about school picture day, musically muse about yoga pants, and loves to imitate the disdain of his teen daughter. Even the multimedia on his website at timhawkins.com features a lighthearted twist, with his podcasts labeled as “poddy breaks.”
“It’s like a bounce house for your brain,” he said, mentioning that all of his material is G-rated and family oriented.
He jokes about his Missouri upbringing. Hawkins was a grocery truck driver until he ventured into comedy in 2002. He swears that laughter is the best medicine — “until the Prozac runs out.”
He tells people they need not be impressed by his life of popular shows, videos and discs.
“It’s not like I have a choice,” he said. “Comedy is my only life skill.”
