PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — After a tip from a resident in North Portland, a woman was found dead and a 58-year-old man was taken into custody as a suspect.

Officers were flagged down around 3:15 p.m. Friday by someone in the 5300 block of North Lombard Street who told them about a possible murder, Portland police said.

In a probable cause document obtained by KOIN 6 News, Terry Hickman told a friend on July 19 he “choked a woman until she stopped breathing in his van.”

When police were alerted, a PPB detective then made contact with Hickman, who asked for and was given an attorney.

Hickman then told the detective where his van was and gave him permission to look inside. When the detective did, he found the body of the woman later identified as Dallas Boyd, the document said.

An autopsy revealed Boyd died of homicidal violence. She was 29.

Hickman is listed as a transient and made his first court appearance Monday. He’s being held without bail in Multnomah County Jail on the murder charge and is expected back in court July 31.

His arrest record in this area dates back to 1986. Many of his arrests  are for parking violations, but he has also been arrested through the years for DUII, reckless driving, criminal mischief, assault, drug possession, interference, menacing, harassment, interfering with public transportation, improperly using the emergency reporting system and, now, murder.

Boyd also has a criminal history dating back to 2014, with recent arrests for harassment and theft.

“We do not believe that this is a stranger-on-stranger situation,” PPB Sgt. Chris Burley told KOIN 6 News. “The information we have is that the 2 knew one another. I don’t have infor on how well they knew one another, but they did know one another.”

This is an ongoing case. Anyone with information is asked to contact Homicide Detail Detective Scott Broughton at 503.823.3774 or by email.
