SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — A fire that broke out at the 855,000 square foot Amazon fulfillment center in San Marcos Monday caused significant damage to a portion of the building.

Crews from across the county rushed to the center at 1401 E. McCarty Lane around 12:37 p.m. San Marcos Hays EMS says the fire was knocked down by 1:45 p.m.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the third floor of the building. The building was evacuated successfully and no one was injured.

“Amazon management and personnel did an outstanding job quickly evacuating the building and providing 100 percent accountability of their employees on duty at the time,” said San Marcos Fire Chief Les Stephens.

The cause of the fire is still being determined. Amazon says during the fire everyone safely exited the building, and those working at the time were excused from work with pay. It canceled the evening shift, as well, but that shouldn’t affect customers.

“At this time, we do not anticipate delays to customer orders as our customers are served by our extensive North American fulfillment network,” Amazon’s Operations PR manager Brenda Alfred wrote in a statement.

Amazon was set to host a camp for 60 middle school students from Goodnight and Miller Middle Schools at 1 p.m. The goal was to inspire students to pursue robotics or other Science, Technology, Engineering and Math studies.
