14 DAY TRIAL // Perhaps one of the most anticipated films of the year is Christopher Nolan’s super-secret project “Interstellar,” with Matthew McConaughey as lead. Then again, each and every one of Nolan’s projects is kept pretty much shrouded in secrecy until they open in theaters, so this time is no different.
We do know about the film that it will be set in the past and an alternate future, in which our planet has gone completely to waste. As the Earth is dying, man is turning his eyes to the skies because that’s where the only hope of survival for the race lies.
The first trailer, which you will also find embedded below, was released in May, while writer / director Nolan spoke in some detail about the plot during an appearance at CinemaCon 2014 earlier this year, in March.
Hours ago, he also made an appearance in Hall H at Comic-Con 2014 in San Diego, the biggest multi-genre event of the kind. This was Nolan’s first time at the event and he made sure it would be memorable – for attendees and himself alike.
So he brought a brand new trailer along with him, to premiere there, Slash Film reports.
Unfortunately, there is no video for it yet, but the same media outlet says that it’s bound to be released online in a few weeks’ time. On the bright side, the consensus seems to be that this will be Nolan’s most daring project because of its scope and span.
McConaughey plays a pilot named Cooper, but before we actually get to see him in space, doing his thing on a space ship, we see him on Earth, contemplating its imminent destruction. “We used to look up at the sky and wonder about our place in the stars. Now, we just look down and wonder about our place in the dirt,” he says.
Towards the second part of the trailer, the action moves into space, and according to Slash Film, there is no better way to describe it than “thrillingly huge, even majestic.” The second half of the preview is “almost entirely visual,” says the same media outlet, with Nolan relying on immense, stunning shots and music to convey a certain feeling.
Anne Hathaway plays Cooper’s pilot, while Jessica Chastain will probably star as his grown-up daughter: so far, both their roles had been kept a secret from the fans.
The way Nolan works is quite very un-Hollywood because he doesn’t like to boast about his projects while still in production. Neither does like revealing too many details about them. In fact, the less the public knows before stepping into the theater to see the film, the better because, this way, the magic is preserved.
In turn, this means that all of Nolan’s trailers are misleading to a certain extent, more so than regular trailers. So even when this Comic-Con trailer gets a wide release, you should probably not fool yourself into thinking you have “Interstellar” figured out, because that won’t be the case until you go and see it in full.
