Intoxicated man heading to Boulder detox center found unresponsive in sheriff’s van

The 23-year-old man from New York was picked up by two Boulder County deputies after he was found intoxicated and “verbally belligerent”

A man has been hospitalized in critical condition for almost two weeks after he was found unresponsive in a van being used to transport him to the detoxification center.

According to a release from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, the 23-year-old man from New York – whose name is not being released – was picked up by two Boulder County deputies after he was found intoxicated and “verbally belligerent” at 9th Street and Canyon Boulevard at 2:30 a.m. Sept. 9.

The deputies put the man into a marked sheriff’s jail transport van and transported him to the Addiction Recovery Center on Airport Road near the Boulder County Jail.

When the deputies arrived and went to remove the man, they found he was not breathing and did not have a pulse. The two deputies, along with other first responders in the area, started CPR and were able to restore the man’s heartbeat.
