GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) — A Gaffney man federally prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition is expected to serve time after prosecutors say deputies found a stolen gun on him.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in South Carolina said Steven Ray Garner, age 44, of Gaffney, was sentenced to 60 months in prison. The sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release.

Prosecutors say Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies on patrol noticed Garner and another person sitting in a vehicle parked outside a vacant house. The passenger was arrested on outstanding warrants.

Prosecutors say a deputy discovered methamphetamine and a loaded Colt .357 magnum in Garner’s waistband while patting him down for weapons. The gun had been reported stolen in Spartanburg County.

Garner, previously convicted for second-degree burglary (violent) and manufacturing methamphetamine, is prohibited from possessing guns and ammunition.
