COTTONWOOD —  A 30-year-old Cottonwood man led law enforcement on a two-county high speed chase early Sunday morning from State Route 273 near Win River Casino to Main Street in Cottonwood just over the Shasta-Tehama county line.

A deputy saw the driver, identified later as Scott Brummett, leaving Win River Casino at 1:47 a.m. Sunday, according to a Shasta County Sheriff’s release.

The deputy noticed the red Toyota Supra was not staying in its lane and Brummett appeared to rev the engine and accelerate when the light turned green, as if trying to race another vehicle, the release said. The vehicle reached speeds of 70 mph in a 50 mph zone and later reached speeds of more than 100 mph.

The deputy tried to make a traffic stop for a DUI investigation, but Brummett continued east on South Bonneyview Road, eventually entering southbound Interstate 5. Anderson Police Department, California Highway Patrol and a CHP helicopter were notified of the pursuit and responded to assist.

An Anderson officer deployed a spike strip on I-5 in the area of Riverside Drive, deflating both front tires of the Toyota, the release said. The vehicle continued south on I-5 into Cottonwood, where it failed to stop at multiple stop signs. It eventually came to a stop on Main Street in Cottonwood, just south of the Shasta County line, where Brummett fled on foot.

Deputies saw Brummett run west from the vehicle, jumping a six-foot fence and running across I-5. A passenger, later identified as Kenny T. Redd, 37, of Memphis, Tennessee, was detained in the vehicle. Redd was cooperative with deputies and was released at the scene.

Tehama County sheriff’s deputies joined in searching for Brummett who was taken into custody without incident. He was found to have an outstanding warrant for DUI and violation of probation and displayed symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol.

Brummett’s terms of probation required him to only operate a vehicle equipped with an interlock ignition device, which the Supra did not have.

Brummett was taken to the Shasta County Jail and booked on charges of evading a peace officer, resisting or delaying a peace officer, DUI: alcohol, operating a vehicle without an interlock device, driving on a suspended driver’s license and an outstanding warrant.
