Michigan Design Center offering third home tour

Michigan Design Center (MDC) presents its third annual Home Tour: Smart Solutions, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 29. The self-guided tour of dwellings in the Birmingham-Bloomfield-Franklin area designed by  local experts include a renovated Cape Cod, a new-build contemporary, a mid-century ranch, and a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum-certified contemporary. Ticket proceeds benefit the Junior League of Birmingham. Tickets are $35 each or $60 per pair. A map/brochure and wristband for the day of the tour will be mailed after purchase. Order tickets online by Sept. 17 at michigandesign.com/news-events. If tickets remain after that date, they may be purchased in Suite 25 at MDC, 1700 Stutz Drive, Troy after Sept. 17 (call 248-649-4772 first). No tickets will be sold the day of the tour.

Dahlia show, competition this weekend

More than 600 dahlias in a range of sizes, colors and forms will be on display next weekend at the 66th annual dahlia show and competition presented by the Southeastern Michigan Dahlia Society. The show runs from 12-9:30 p.m. Sept. 15 and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 16 at West Bloomfield’s Orchard Mall, 6337 Orchard Lake Road. 'Evening of Roses' at Ford House

Among the highlights at Edsel & Eleanor Ford House (Ford House) in Grosse Pointe Shores is a formal rose garden, created at the request of Eleanor Ford. This fall, Ford House is celebrating her love for roses with an open air soirée during “Evening of Roses” at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 20. Attendees can stroll through Eleanor’s beloved gardens, learn more about roses through hands-on demonstrations, enjoy a cocktail and treats made with rose and receive gifts to take home. Sherwin-Williams names Cavern Clay 2019 ‘it’ colorIf you love all things 1970s, take heart: Sherwin-Williams named its 2019 Color of the Year this week and it is a groovy shade of orange called Cavern Clay. Calling it a hue of “unbridled adventure,” Sherwin-Williams acknowledges that the “it” hue is a nod to the ’70s. “2019 will be a renaissance of the 1970s — with a twist. In the coming year, we will embrace our pioneering spirits and artisan ingenuity,” said Sue Wadden, director of Sherwin-Williams’ color marketing, in a press release. Cavern Clay embodies “renewal, simplicity and free-spirited, bohemian flair.”
